Tesla's first Semi electric truck was delivered on 1 local time, five years after it was unveiled.
At a ceremony at Tesla's Gigafactory in Nevada, the company delivered its first semi-attached electric heavy truck to PepsiCo Inc, which ordered 100 Semis from Tesla in 2017. Tesla did not disclose pricing or updated production plans for the car.
In 2017, Tesla said it would sell a 300-mile version of the Semi for $150,000 and a 500-mile version for $180,000, but it's unclear whether rising raw material costs will have an impact on the price of the electric truck.
Tesla's electric heavy truck eliminates the passenger area, leaving only the driver's seat right in the middle of the cockpit. An oversized touch screen is set on each side of the driver's seat to display vehicle and road information, left and right rearview mirror images and other content.
According to the report, the electric truck can accelerate from a standstill to about 97 kilometers per hour in 20 seconds. At a full load of 37 tons, the battery has a range of about 800 kilometers.
The truck has a maximum power output of 1.5 megawatts at its own charging station, and a maximum driving range of about 560 kilometers can be added after 30 minutes of charging. Charging costs are about 2.5 times cheaper than using diesel.
"The Semi has a range of 400km on a 30-minute charge," Musk said previously. Given that 80 percent of freight trips are less than 400 kilometers, this means that the electric vehicle can make the trip in 30 minutes on a charge."
Musk said the electric truck had been in testing between Nevada and California and had already completed a test drive of 800 kilometers on a single charge. He also said electric long-distance trucks could help reduce highway emissions and outperform existing diesel models in terms of power and safety. But industry insiders say more data is needed to make a comprehensive assessment of the all-electric truck's potential for long-distance heavy transport.
